CoreWeave bonds enter distress as AI-industry debt risk spreads
Decision Brief
Last week CoreWeave's bond spread widened to 1,000 basis points over Treasuries, entering commonly defined distressed-debt territory, and its stock has fallen more than 20% since Tuesday's close. Co-founder Brannin McBee told the Financial Times the same day that he hopes to raise the debt to investment grade to borrow from insurers, which only deepened investor worries about further leverage. Q2 results showed over $35 billion in liabilities and more than $1 billion in first-half losses, but remaining performance obligations of $103.7 billion, about 40% maturing in 2028 and mostly non-cancelable, with Microsoft, OpenAI and a suspected Nvidia as the third-largest customer generating nearly three-quarters of Q2 revenue. The concern has spilled over to the whole neocloud group: Oracle shares fell nearly 10% over the same period and its bonds were also sold off. For operators that buy GPUs with debt and resell compute, every step up in funding costs directly erodes profit; for the model developers and cloud providers buying that compute, supplier debt has become a delivery risk to factor into evaluations. The article also notes that CoreWeave's long-term contracts support cash flow in the near term, and the real test will come only when AI demand slows.
