AI clones push indie devs to hide early builds
Decision Brief
Indie game Drunken Goddess Reflex was set to launch a public demo during Steam Next Fest, but studio Alliance Arts switched at the last minute to a closed test open only to players who agree to distribution and streaming rules, citing the risk that the demo could be quickly cloned by AI or other tools and released before the official launch. Developer Freya Holmér once shared a rotating-Tetris prototype, and multiple AI-assisted clones appeared days later; McPixel creator Sos Sosowski has logged a flood of similar complaints, saying indies face a bind where not showing anything means no sales, while showing it means getting copied. Papers, Please creator Lucas Pope says he now worries that discussing unfinished work during development will be scraped by AI.
