Anthropic's cloud deals strain as AWS, Google, Microsoft view it as a competitor, limiting compute access
Decision Brief
According to leaked S-1 filings seen by The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic is having trouble getting enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft, which increasingly see the Claude developer as a competitor rather than a customer. The filings also show Anthropic believes its cloud contract spending could exceed $750 billion, with some deals still under negotiation. Even at that cost, capacity remains insufficient, and the company has begun leasing its own data centers and working with third-party operators, though it worries these operators have "limited operating histories" and are less reliable than hyperscalers. Financially, Anthropic posted a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half against $16.3 billion in revenue, with just two customers contributing about a fifth of sales. The filings also warn Anthropic could face liability beyond its existing insurance coverage if harmful AI behavior causes damage. Last week the company told potential investors Q3 revenue reached $16.8 billion, up 45% quarter-over-quarter, and it reportedly targets a November IPO. For teams using the Claude API, the shift from partnership to competition between cloud and model providers could affect future compute supply stability, pricing and regional availability; teams tying critical business to a single model vendor should reassess multi-model backup and self-hosted open-source model options.
