YC President Garry Tan open-sources gstack: turns Claude Code into a 23-role virtual engineering team
Decision Brief
gstack ships 23 role tools and 8 auxiliary tools, all Markdown slash commands, free under the MIT license. Install takes about 30 seconds: clone the repo and run ./setup, which requires Claude Code, Git, and Bun v1.4.2+, installs to ~/.claude/skills/gstack, and configures CLAUDE.md. Team mode is supported: ./setup --team enables auto-updates in the repo, with a silent, once-per-session, hourly rate-limited update check; --host auto can install for experimental hosts like Codex CLI, Cursor, and Copilot CLI, though only Claude Code is full-certification level, with security skills hook-enforced. For first-time Claude Code users, gstack replaces blank prompts with commands like /office-hours, /plan-ceo-review, /review, and /qa for a more structured path. For tech leads and teams, it runs review, QA, and release workflows on every PR to cut manual repetition; /cso needs a Bun build with four --no-compile-autoload-* flags plus a local compilation toolchain, and if missing, installation continues but the skill reports only "not assessed." OpenClaw users can reuse all skills directly via ACP, plus 4 extra conversational methodology skills that don't depend on a Claude Code session.
