ida-pro-mcp released: connecting IDA Pro to LLMs via MCP for reverse engineering
Decision Brief
The project requires Python 3.11+ and IDA Pro 8.3+ (9 recommended; IDA Free unsupported), and you must first switch to the latest Python via idapyswitch. It supports over twenty MCP clients including Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Zed, and Codex, and provides ida-pro-mcp --config to generate a generic config. Install paths include Claude Code's plugin marketplace command, Codex's plugin command, and Kimi Code's /plugins install slash command; manual GUI installation is now marked as no longer recommended and will be deprecated. The new idalib-mcp is the highlight: it places each open database in a separate idalib worker process, and workers register in a local discovery directory and survive supervisor exits, with a later supervisor automatically taking over the same file. idb_open's mode parameter distinguishes prefer_headless, force_headless, prefer_gui, and force_gui; --max-workers limits concurrency (default 4, 0 for unlimited), workers auto-exit after one hour idle, and idb_close can release them proactively. For security teams and reverse engineers doing batch sample analysis, this persistent worker model removes the overhead of repeatedly starting IDA. However, the author explicitly recommends switching to the official Hex-Rays IDA MCP Server at the top of the README, which should be factored into any long-term evaluation.
