Replit CEO says it has ended its Anthropic partnership and shifted to OpenAI

In an on-stage interview at TechCrunch Disrupt, Replit co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad said the company no longer works with Anthropic, citing cost, partnership, and performance. He said both internal and public benchmarks show OpenAI's Sol and Astra perform better at building vibe-coded apps from scratch, adding bluntly that "ChatGPT is better now." Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August but had never disclosed that it had split with Anthropic. The claim has drawn pushback. People familiar with the relationship say the partnership remains intact, and evidence suggests Replit was still using Anthropic products as late as September; a September blog post mentioned Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 running in production for Replit Agent. TechCrunch has asked Replit for confirmation with no further response yet. For developers building and deploying apps on Replit, the model switch means generation quality, latency, and inference costs will shift with the new vendor. Teams tracking the model-supplier landscape may also read the remarks as a signal that enterprise customers are reshuffling model choices around cost and performance.
