OpenAI clarified ChatGPT Work's operation: on web and mobile, all work happens in the cloud; the desktop app can access local files and apps. However, cloud conversations won't appear on desktop initially, and desktop work sessions and local files remain on that computer. This limits cross-device syncing, preventing seamless handoff of a single work session across devices. For enterprise users relying on ChatGPT Work for team collaboration or long workflows, this restriction means manually switching environments and being mindful of data location. While local file access boosts individual productivity, the cloud-local data separation may complicate compliance and auditing. OpenAI says it will adjust based on feedback.
