New York Halts All New Data Center Approvals
Decision Brief
New York has announced a suspension of all approvals for new large data centers, becoming the first U.S. state to do so. Governor Kathy Hochul stated that the AI-driven building boom cannot come at the expense of higher electricity bills, water consumption, or local control. The moratorium is effective immediately and applies to all new data center projects above a certain scale. For cloud computing companies, AI startups, and major tech firms planning to build data centers in New York, this policy will significantly delay new facility delivery and may force them to consider other states. Existing data center operations are unaffected, but future expansions and new projects face uncertainty.
