gemini-notebook-mcp-cli Adds Encrypted Credential Storage for Logins
Decision Brief
This unified package provides the nlm CLI and a Gemini Notebook MCP server, covering listing/creating notebooks, adding sources, querying, generating podcasts and videos, downloading artifacts, research, sharing, and batch processing, with support for clients like Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, and VS Code Copilot. This update adds protected login storage: enable it with nlm auth storage set protected, or choose Credential protection in the nlm setup wizard. Saved Google logins are then encrypted, with keys stored in the OS keychain instead of plaintext files. The option is off by default; without it, servers, cron, Docker, and SSH environments keep the original plaintext file approach. The impact centers on toolchains that need long-term saved logins. Developers using the CLI for scripts and automation, and users switching accounts locally with nlm login --profile, can choose per machine whether to encrypt or stay plaintext. The project docs also note it uses an internal API, an undocumented interface that may change at any time and may not comply with Google's terms of service, with risk borne by the user.
