kepano releases obsidian-skills, letting coding agents read and write Obsidian vaults directly
Decision Brief
kepano/obsidian-skills provides six skills: obsidian-markdown for creating and editing Obsidian-flavored Markdown with wikilinks, embeds, callouts, and properties; obsidian-bases for .base files with views, filters, formulas, and summaries; json-canvas for .canvas files with nodes, edges, groups, and connections; obsidian-cli for interacting with vaults via the Obsidian CLI, supporting plugin and theme development; defuddle for extracting clean Markdown from web pages using Defuddle to save tokens; and knap for rendering Markdown templates from JSON or CSV data and batch-generating files. These skills follow the Agent Skills spec and work with any compatible agent, including Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode. Installation differs by agent: Claude Code can install via /plugin marketplace add kepano/obsidian-skills and /plugin install obsidian@obsidian-skills, or by placing the repo contents in the .claude folder at the Obsidian vault root; Codex requires copying the skills/ directory to ~/.codex/skills; OpenCode requires cloning the entire repo to ~/.opencode/skills/ and cannot just copy the inner skills/ folder, otherwise the directory structure won't meet requirements—OpenCode auto-discovers all SKILL.md files under that path with no need to modify opencode.json, and it works after a restart. For developers managing notes and knowledge bases with Obsidian, this means batch note generation, format conversion, and structural editing of Canvas and Bases files can be delegated to coding agents, reducing the cost of hand-writing these proprietary formats.
