Figma launches Figma Specs, using Markdown to define design rules for agents
Decision Brief
Figma launched Figma Specs, a Markdown editor for defining a design language in a simpler way, with docs serving as a reference for teams and agents designing in Figma. Specs can be standalone files or live directly on the canvas; beyond text editing, they can reference canvas elements, embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs. Teams can connect design libraries, codebases, and specs together into centralized design system context that agents can follow. Figma also moved code layers from private to public beta, letting more users try turning designs into code via agents or editing partial code to iterate on prototypes. Canvas agents opened to a wider user group a week earlier. The company also announced MCP support for 20+ new tools, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian startup Sarvam. Payload, the open-source headless CMS Figma acquired last year, is now integrated with Figma Make to generate dynamic sites and manage content directly, with Payload downloads up sixfold over the past 12 months. For frontend and design engineering teams building design systems on Figma, generating sites with Figma Make, and using canvas agents, these changes mean design rules can be centrally managed and read by agents, though output remains subject to model non-determinism.
