Nuclear open-source music player adds MCP server, letting AI Agents control playback
Decision Brief
Nuclear is a free, open-source, ad-free music player for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It searches and streams music, manages playlists and favorites, shows synced lyrics, and includes a built-in plugin store and theme system. It's built with Tauri (Rust + React), uses pnpm and Turborepo for its monorepo, and requires Node.js 22 and pnpm 9 or above. The standout new feature is an MCP server enabled in settings (listening on 127.0.0.1:8800), which users can connect to Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf. Once connected, AI Agents can directly drive the player to search, play, and manage queues. The project also provides a Nuclear MCP Skill to help AI quickly understand the available interfaces. For developers using tools like Claude Code or Cursor, this means AI agents can control local music playback directly within coding workflows, turning the player into a programmable MCP tool node. The project is licensed under AGPL-3.0.
