Google brings Gemini conversational navigation to Apple CarPlay
Decision Brief
After bringing Gemini to Android Auto last year, Google is now bringing it to Apple CarPlay. The feature launched for U.S. drivers that day, and Google says a global rollout is underway without a specific regional timeline. Users tap the Gemini icon in Google Maps on the infotainment screen for hands-free voice use, including multi-step requests such as asking for place recommendations and then having it plan a route that avoids tolls; Google also describes it as a conversational entry point for reporting traffic disruptions and checking stops and place info along the way. For drivers using Google Maps on CarPlay, the update expands the voice assistant from single-step commands to continuous conversational navigation. But the Personal Intelligence feature announced yesterday for Android Auto and built-in Google vehicles—which lets the assistant read user information from Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search—was not mentioned for CarPlay, and Google has yet to confirm whether CarPlay users will get it. With nearly 12 months between Android Auto and CarPlay, Gemini's in-car reach keeps expanding, but the gap in personalization between the two platforms remains a real variable in the experience.
