Agent Skills open standard released: extend agent capabilities with SKILL.md folders
Decision Brief
Agent Skills is a lightweight open format whose core is a folder containing a SKILL.md. The file needs at least name and description metadata plus execution instructions, and may bundle scripts, references, templates, and other resources. Agents load skills via progressive disclosure in three steps: at startup they read only name and description to judge relevance, then load the full SKILL.md into context once a task matches, and finally execute instructions while calling bundled code or referencing files. Because full instructions load only when needed, agents can hold many skills while using very little context. Originally developed by Anthropic and released as an open standard, the format is being adopted by a growing number of agent products, with repo code under Apache 2.0 and docs under CC-BY-4.0. For developers building agent toolchains, this means team-specific processes like legal review flows, data analysis pipelines, or deck formatting can become version-controlled skill folders, written once and reused across compatible agent products without rewriting prompts or plugins per product.
