Chrome MCP Server adds a visual editor for Claude Code and Codex
Decision Brief
Chrome MCP Server is a Chrome extension-based MCP server that exposes Chrome browser capabilities to AI assistants like Claude, supporting browser automation, content analysis, and semantic search. It reuses the user's everyday Chrome profile and login state, so unlike Playwright-based setups it doesn't need a separate browser process—just activate the extension and connect via Streamable HTTP or STDIO. The project ships 20+ tools covering window/tab management, screenshots, network monitoring, content analysis, interactions, and bookmark and history management. The December 30, 2025 update added a visual editor for Claude Code and Codex. Developers doing browser automation with Claude Code or Codex can now operate and adjust directly through a visual interface instead of the command line, cutting the cost of repeated prompt-based debugging. The project also includes a built-in vector database with custom WebAssembly SIMD optimizations that speed up vector operations by 4–8x. The approach suits developers and teams that need large models to control the browser for everyday tasks, especially those who value local privacy and don't want to log in again or set up a separate browser environment. The project is still in early development, with planned support for authentication, record-and-replay, and a Firefox extension.
