Disney agrees to hire majority of Character.AI staff
Decision Brief
According to legal filings, Disney agreed to extend job offers to at least 60 Character.AI employees, covering most of its staff, with expected total annual compensation of about $60 million; the vast majority of those who received offers have accepted. Character.AI previously said Disney agreed to acquire some of its assets for $20 million, and its former CEO Karandeep Anand recently became Disney's first CTO. The deal is a "stalking horse" bid, and other companies may still make higher offers. The filing states that Character.AI, despite a large and active user base, filed for bankruptcy this week, weighed down by high costs, potential litigation liability, and regulatory involvement. The company was sued after a 14-year-old boy died by suicide after becoming addicted to its chatbot, and it faces government investigations over child safety issues. For teams operating consumer chatbots, this asset and staff takeover shows that user scale alone is not enough to offset costs and compliance risk; developers evaluating similar products need to factor litigation and regulatory spending into their long-term cost models.
