YouTube Music adds labels to AI-generated songs
Decision Brief
On October 14, YouTube announced it is bringing the "Made with AI" label to songs, flagging tracks that were "modified or entirely generated" by AI, including those using generative models for composition and vocals. The label launched first in the YouTube Music app that day and will later expand to the main YouTube app. Listeners can tap the label on the playback page to see more details. YouTube says the move builds on its existing AI labeling principles for video, using partnerships with music partners and its own detection tools to identify AI-generated tracks. For music partners uploading songs to YouTube, the platform's rules now spell out how to disclose generative AI use; if undisclosed, YouTube may use "other signals" to determine whether a song was AI-generated. This means independent musicians and labels relying on YouTube Music to distribute their work need to adjust their upload process, proactively declaring the extent of AI involvement in metadata or the submission flow, or risk being automatically labeled by the platform. Other music platforms are acting too: Spotify introduced voluntary AI labels earlier this year and refuses to recommend songs with "AI personas," Apple Music is reportedly adding AI tags as well, Deezer offers a toggle to filter AI tracks, and Bandcamp has outright banned AI music.
