Claude Code repo update: npm install deprecated in favor of official script, Homebrew, and WinGet
Decision Brief
Claude Code is a terminal-based agent coding tool that understands codebases and executes routine tasks, explains complex code, and handles git workflows via natural language; it also works in IDEs or via @claude on GitHub. The core change is installation: npm global install is now explicitly deprecated, with three official options—curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash on macOS/Linux, brew install --cask claude-code, and on Windows irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex or winget install Anthropic.ClaudeCode. npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code still runs but is deprecated. Engineers baking Claude Code into automation scripts, Docker images, or dev-machine setup must swap npm steps for the platform's official script or package manager command, or risk the deprecated path breaking. Windows users gain WinGet as a native option; macOS/Linux users gain the Homebrew cask. The repo also details data collection: usage data such as code acceptance or rejection, related conversation data, and /bug feedback, with stated retention limits on sensitive info, restricted access to session data, and a commitment not to use feedback for model training.
