FastMCP becomes the standard MCP framework, surpassing one million daily downloads
Decision Brief
FastMCP is a Python framework for building MCP servers and clients. Decorators turn ordinary Python functions into tools, with schemas, argument validation, and docs auto-generated by the framework. When connecting to remote servers, transport negotiation, authentication, and protocol lifecycle are also managed by the framework. FastMCP 1.0 was merged into the official MCP Python SDK in 2024; the independently maintained version now sees one million daily downloads, and about 70% of MCP servers across languages are driven by some version of FastMCP. A TypeScript version is maintained by the same team and installed via npm. For developers building MCP servers in Python, this means no hand-written protocol serialization or argument validation—tool definitions and business logic can live in the same function. For client developers connecting to multiple MCP servers, the transport layer and auth logic are handled by the framework, so switching between local and remote servers requires no protocol-layer changes. Prefect also offers Horizon, an enterprise-grade MCP gateway supporting GitHub deployments with branch previews and instant rollback, SSO and tool-level permission control, audit logs, and observability. Organizations needing centralized governance of multiple teams' MCP deployments can build permission and registry management on top of it.
