Google Workspace CLI: one command-line tool to manage Drive, Gmail, Calendar and other APIs
Decision Brief
Built in Rust, the tool supports npm global install, Homebrew, Nix and prebuilt binaries, and requires Node.js 18+ plus a Google Cloud project with OAuth credentials enabled. Rather than a static command list, it reads Google's Discovery Service at runtime to generate its command surface dynamically, so new Workspace interfaces or methods are picked up automatically. All responses are structured JSON, with --dry-run preview, --page-all auto-pagination to NDJSON, and gws schema to inspect any method's request and response structure. The repo also bundles 100+ skill files (SKILL.md) covering every API type plus 50 common recipes for Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar and Sheets, installable in bulk via npx skills add, with a Gemini CLI extension and OpenClaw integration also provided. Authentication covers multiple scenarios: local desktop uses gws auth setup and gws auth login, with credentials encrypted via AES-256-GCM and stored in the system keychain; CI or headless environments can export via gws auth export and set GOOGLE_WORKSPACE_CLI_CREDENTIALS_FILE, or use a service account or pass an existing token via GOOGLE_WORKSPACE_CLI_TOKEN. Note that when an unverified OAuth app is in testing mode, Google limits consent scopes to about 25, while the recommended preset includes 85+ scopes and will fail outright, requiring -s drive, gmail, sheets to select services individually. The project is also under active development, with breaking changes expected before v1.0, so integrators should budget for upgrade costs.
