Cloudflare and Commerce.com enable WebMCP shopping tools for nearly 100,000 store domains
Decision Brief
WebMCP is an experimental browser standard proposed by Google that exposes structured tools like search_products to a page, so agents no longer have to guess buttons from HTML. Cloudflare implements it via edge script injection: once enabled, a small script is injected automatically and merchants need no code changes. Commerce.com uses its mcp-server-client toolkit as the edge bridge, so an agent can complete search and add-to-cart with two calls, search_products and add_to_cart, while checkout still requires the user to click on the merchant's domain. Because the original standard toggles per domain, Cloudflare uses Configuration Rules and custom hostname metadata so merchants can flip an opt-out switch in the dashboard and have WebMCP skipped at the edge with no added latency. It also adds a zone-level MCP URL setting to support custom paths like /api/mcp, and the script exits directly if the MCP server is offline or the browser lacks support.
