Context7 provides real-time versioned docs for AI coding agents
Decision Brief
Context7 addresses LLMs relying on outdated training data and generating fabricated APIs by pulling version-specific documentation and code examples from source sites and injecting them into prompts. It supports two modes: CLI+Skills (install the skill and guide the agent to use the ctx7 command for docs, no MCP needed) and MCP (register the Context7 MCP server so the agent natively calls documentation tools). Setup runs via npx ctx7 setup, requires Node.js 22.13 or higher, supports OAuth authentication with generated API keys, and accepts --cursor, --claude, or --opencode to target different agents. For developers using coding agents like Cursor and Claude Code, this cuts out manual tab-switching to check docs and reduces errors from API version mismatches. Teams maintaining internal libraries can submit them to the Context7 index so agents reference correct docs directly. It is recommended to configure a free API key to raise rate limits and to specify the library ID or version in prompts (e.g. /supabase/supabase or Next.js 16) to skip the matching step and improve retrieval efficiency.
