Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund
Decision Brief
Anthropic announced the creation of a "public benefit fund" as a wholly owned entity of the company, and is contributing 5% of its shares to it. For every 50% increase in the company's valuation, it may choose to add another 2% of shares. So far, the company has only provided directional descriptions, such as large donations to traditional nonprofit organizations or direct cash payments to specific groups. The funds may also go toward research on AI's impact on the job market; Anthropic has previously committed $200 million to studying related issues. The company also said that given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed, and the fund will retain sufficient flexibility. For investors and partners focused on Anthropic's future capital structure and governance arrangements, the most critical unknown is the fund's actual decision-making mechanism: who decides which public benefit directions are worth funding, and how the voting rights and disposal of the 5% stake will work. The company said it will disclose structural and governance details in the coming months.
